Civis Foundation and Miami New Drama commissioned Tony-nominated playwright Aurin Squire to write City Hall, a site-specific, participatory theatrical experience. The play emerges from a shared conviction: that theater is a civic act.
Since the ancient Greeks, the stage has served as a space where communities gather to examine what they owe one another. City Hall takes that tradition seriously, bringing it directly into city hall chambers where local governance is conducted.
American democratic life faces a crisis of trust. Confidence in public institutions has reached historic lows. The ability to engage across difference — to advocate, debate, and still recognize a shared future — has frayed. At the same time, regional theater, another site of civic encounter, faces its own reckoning through closures and diminished funding. By bringing together a major American playwright and civic spaces where the work can be replicated, the partnership treats theater as infrastructure for democratic life.
The world premiere production will be presented by Miami New Drama during its 2026–27 season.
